How do I subscribe to a podcast that isn't in iTunes?

  1. Copy the feed URL to the clipboard.
  2. Open Castro and tap the + button at the bottom of the list of podcasts.
  3. Tap the clipboard button to open the URL.

You can also type the URL into the search bar and tap Go.

How do I import subscriptions from other podcast apps?

Castro imports subscriptions from other podcast apps using OPML (a generally recognized format for sets of subscriptions).

To export your subscriptions from iTunes on your Mac:

  1. Switch to the Podcasts screen.
  2. Click File > Library > Export Playlist…
  3. In the Format menu select OPML.
  4. Save the file.

To transfer the OPML to your iPhone you can email it to yourself, or if you use Dropbox add it there. On your phone you can then choose to open the OPML file in Castro to import the subscriptions.

Instructions for exporting from other podcast apps are here: Downcast, Pocket Casts, Instacast.

How do I export subscriptions to other podcast apps?

To export subscriptions tap the following link on your device: castro://export. This will open Castro, generate an OPML file of your subscriptions, and bring up a menu to open that file in other apps that support the format.

We will add a way to do this without using the URL scheme in a future update.

Does Castro use cellular data?

By default, Castro uses cellular data to check podcast feeds for new episodes but only downloads new episodes or streams an episode in continuous play over Wi-Fi. You can change this behaviour in settings.

Can I download podcasts using cellular data?

By default, Castro downloads episodes on Wi-Fi only, but you can change this in settings.

Does Castro work with video podcasts?

Castro will play the audio track. We will address video podcasts in a future version.

Does Castro have continuous play?

Yes! As of version 1.1, you can activate continuous play from settings.

Does Castro support playlists?

Castro has a single playlist. The episodes timeline contains unlistened episodes of all your podcasts. You can change the sort order in settings. You can play episodes one by one or enable continuous play to automatically play through to the next one. You also have full control over whether the next episode can be streamed or if Castro should choose the next downloaded one instead.

Does Castro have a sleep timer?

Yes! As of version 1.1, you can start a sleep timer from settings. If you're still awake when the sleep timer expires just tap play on the lock screen or on your headphone remote to extend the timer without having to open the app.

Where are the settings?

On the main screen you can tap the button in the top left corner to open settings. Scroll down to see the various configuration options. You can also pinch the screen or tap and hold the play button to get to settings from anywhere in the app.

You can also configure individual podcast settings by tapping into the podcast and tapping the settings button.

Will you add sync and an iPad or Mac version?

We are currently fully focused on iPhone. We may support additional platforms in the future but we have no expected delivery date for that as of yet.

Can I import media that is not in a podcast?

Not directly. Castro can only download media from podcast feeds. One option is to create a free Huffduffer account which makes it easy to add media to a personal podcast feed for Castro to download.

Castro crashed. How can I send the crash report?

Crash reports are automatically collected and submitted anonymously to help us improve Castro. If you would like to send us a specific report follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Diagnostics & Usage Data.
  3. Navigate to the most recent Castro crash. It will start with “Castro_” and be the last one in the list if there are multiple.
  4. Tap and hold on the text to bring up the text selection interface.
  5. Drag the handles so all the text is selected (apologies, this is the most awkward part).
  6. Copy the text and paste it in an email.
